SAGE Journals Mobile Vouchering

SAGE Journals are pleased to announce that in addition to mobile optimized journal sites, SAGE now offers mobile vouchering. Mobile vouchers allow users at UoB to tie their mobile device to UoB online subscriptions - allowing off campus access while on the go.
Each user’s mobile device must be vouched for individually and you can obtain a voucher following these simple step-by-step instructions:
1.   Connect to the UoB wireless network and open the mobile journal site that they would like to obtain a voucher for (for example http://m.ajs.sagepub.com)
2.   Select “Authorize This Device”
3.   Complete the "Authenticate Mobile Device for SAGE Journals" form and click submit
4.   Copy the voucher code provided on the next screen and click on URL provided
5.   Enter the voucher code and select "Get access"

Once you’ve obtained a voucher from one journal site, you can use that voucher to access all journals based on the library’s e-access subscriptions.  Vouchers will be valid for approximately 6 months as long as the subscriptions are active.
Learn more about this new offering with our Mobile Voucher Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). For additional support, please contact onlinesupport@sagepub.co.uk

DISCOVER/EBSCOhost personalisation maintenance, Tuesday 18th December 12-3pm

We've had warning from EBSCO that they will be upgrading the personalisation features in EBSCOhost (including DISCOVER), from 12 noon on Tuesday 18th December for approximately 3 hours.

EBSCOhost databases (including DISCOVER) will continue to be available, however some functionality will be affected:

  • Personal User Authentication
  • Checkout and Download of eBooks
  • Alerts
  • Access to My EBSCOhost folder items or the ability to save items to personalized folders from session
  • RSS will be unavailable

Access to resources via UK Access Management Federation - fixed

We believe that the fault with access to UK Access Management Federation resources is now fixed. However, if you do continue to get any error messages, please let us know.

Friday 14 December 2012

Access to resources via UK Access Management Federation

We're having intermittent problems accessing digital library resources via UK Access Management Federation links. Problems have so far been observed with FAME, XpertHR, TRILT and some Dawsonera titles. You may get an error message something like this:
Bad Gateway!

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request GET /idp/profile/Shibboleth/SSO.

Reason: Error reading from remote server

We are working to solve the problem as quickly as possible.

Access to FAME off-campus

We are having issues with access to the FAME database off-campus. The on-campus link is working correctly, so please use that if you are on site. The problem has been notified to our supplier.

Friday 7 December 2012

JISC Historic Books - technical problem

There is currently a technical problem which affects searching JISC Historic Books.

The platform was running slow yesterday and this morning and the supplier has been investigating this. At times you may now get an error message when you try to search:

“Error: performing your search. Please contact the person responsible for maintaining the site”.

The supplier will be re-booting the whole platform, so it will be unavailable for periods this afternoon.

Thursday 6 December 2012

Proxy Error

We're getting reports of a strange error message when trying to access Digital Resources:

Proxy Error

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request GET /link.asp.
Reason: Error reading from remote server

This is appearing when trying to access various different resources, but not consistently. If you do get it, press the back button and try again, as the error is only happening intermittently. Pasting the URL into a different browser (e.g. Firefox, Internet Explorer or Chrome) often works.

This problem has been reported to our software supplier and hopefully it will be resolved soon.

Dawsonera downtime Saturday 8th December

We've had warning that Dawsonera ebooks will be unavailable from 10am to 6pm on Saturday 8th December, while the supplier performs an upgrade.

Thursday 29 November 2012

Science Direct upgrade 1st December

We've been notified that Science Direct will be upgraded on Saturday, 1st December, approx. 12.30-6.00pm, to extend Internet browser support to include Google Chrome for PC and now support Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox for Mac.

During this period some Science Direct services may be disrupted, although they are not expecting significant downtime.

Tuesday 27 November 2012

Science Direct titles before 2004 - update

The problem with Science Direct coverage dates has now been fixed, and they should be showing correctly on DISCOVER and our A-Z journal list. There may still be some catalogue records with wrong dates for a while. As a general rule, our electronic access begins in 2004, unless the journal is listed as Open Access (which means it is freely available to anyone).

Tuesday 20 November 2012

Science Direct journals before 2004

The Digital Library has just acquired a lot of new journals on the Science Direct platform. Our access to these journals starts from 2004 - however due to a technical problem, DISCOVER and our A-Z journal list think our access goes back earlier than this. This is causing some problems are users are directed to content they think they will be able to access, but then can't. We apologize for this inconvenience and are working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

Searching within EBSCO ebooks - Internet Explorer problem

We've been alerted to a technical problem when trying to search within the full text of ebooks in EBSCOhost. If using Internet Explorer, you may get this error message:
A System Problem has Occurred.
We're sorry, your request could not be processed due an internal server error.
To continue with your session, please click here.
There is no problem when using Firefox or Chrome, and the problem does not affect Dawsonera ebooks, which make up most of our collection. We have notified EBSCO of the problem.
If this affects you, try switching to a different browser.

Fraudulent email

A fraudulent email is in circulation to some University e-mail addresses, purporting to be from the Vice Chancellor. The email requests students to confirm their payment details by making a significant payment and the link takes you to a spoof BREO login page. This email is a scam, and does not come from the University. Do not make any payments as the University does not require you to confirm your payment details.

Tuesday 13 November 2012

Changes to Springer e-journals

The journal publisher Springer is changing their e-journal platform on 16 November. The new platform should be "faster, easier to use and optimized for most mobile devices". We have access to a small set of Springer journals, and our existing links should redirect automatically to the new site. The only disruption you should notice is if you have created a personal account at My SpringerLink, as these accounts will not be migrated.

Thursday 8 November 2012

DISCOVER/EBSCOhost sign in accounts and "records not available"

Many thanks to those of you who sent in their account details for investigation. EBSCO have provided an explanation:
The message saying that the records are not available will show for any content saved to a folder that has been removed from the databases it was originally in. If a publisher decides they are going to update the amount of content they provide to us and we are forced to remove this content from our databases this message will display in a users folder letting them know that these records are no longer available to be accessed. Unfortunately we are unable to provide this content at this time due to our agreements with the publishers and we are at the mercy of what they would like to provide us.
In other words, the article itself has been deleted from EBSCO's database, along with the record of it in your account. We suggest that you use RefWorks to save references instead. You can easily export references from DISCOVER or EBSCOhost to your RefWorks account by adding them to a folder and then clicked "Export".

Take part in an e-resources survey for a chance to win an iPad

Would you like to win an iPad? Do you want to help your library? How about adding your voice to a global survey about technology? If you have 15 minutes, you have enough time to participate in a global study about undergraduate students, information literacy, and e-resources.
Participants will be automatically entered to win a brand new iPad, and
anyone who takes part in the survey will be contributing to the research on libraries and technology today. Send your questions or comments to Credo Reference.

Note - this survey is being carried out by Credo Reference and Libraries
Thriving, not by University of Bedfordshire.

Researcher staff and student accounts and the library

If you are a University of Bedfordshire researcher, you will have been set up with 2 user accounts - a staff account and a student account. Please use your student account (username is a registration number) to access all digital library resources, not your staff account (username e.g. jbloggs). Your student account gives you full access to all of our digital library resources - your staff account does not. Just use your staff account for accessing your GroupWise email, and for printing in the library if you have been authorised to charge this to your faculty and have been given a separate staff ID card for this purpose.

DISCOVER/EBSCO "sign in" problems

We've had some complaints from students that they can't sign into their DISCOVER/EBSCO accounts or that they have forgotten their password and the "Forgot your password" links are not working correctly. However we don't have enough information about the problems or the error messages received for EBSCO to be able to fix it. So, if you do have a problem, please let us know with details of your account name and any error messages you get, and we will try to get the problem fixed.

Wiley journals at risk Saturday 27 October 10am-12 noon

We've been warned that our access to ejournals hosted by Wiley Online Library may be disrupted on Saturday 27 October between 10am and 12 noon, while the supplier upgrades their system. This will affect any ejournals with "wiley.com" in the URL.

Thursday 25 October 2012

Possible disruption to EBSCO "sign in" accounts, Friday 26 October

EBSCO have warned us of maintenance affecting login to personalised accounts on Friday 26th October for one hour between 12 noon and 1pm. All our EBSCO databases (including DISCOVER) could be affected. Access to the databases themselves is not affected - only the "sign in" functionality to your individual account and folders.

Friday 19 October 2012

Wednesday 17 October 2012

DISCOVER "Sign In" confusion

At the top right of the screen in DISCOVER you'll notice a "Sign in" link

This has been causing some confusion. It refers to an account you may or may not have created with EBSCO, who supply as with DISCOVER as well as a number of other databases. This account allows you to:

  • Save preferences
  • Organize your research with folders
  • Share your folders with others
  • View others' foldersSave and retrieve your search history
  • Create email alerts and/or RSS feeds
  • Gain access to your saved research remotely.
You can set up this account with any username and password you like - it is not linked in any way to your University username and password, and if you try logging in with your University username and password you will not find an account already set up for you.

The Sign In link is also not a way of logging into DISCOVER from off campus. If you are off campus and you follow our link to DISCOVER, you will see a UoB login screen asking for your username and password before you are passed through to DISCOVER. If you see an error message at this stage it indicates a problem with your account, and you will need to contact us

Redirect error when trying to access Web of Knowledge records through DISCOVER off campus

We've had reports of a problem when trying to get to Web of Knowledge records found through DISCOVER when off campus - you first get a message that Web of Knowledge doesn't recognise your computer's IP address, and are then asked for an Institutional login. Having selected "UK Access Management Federation" and then "University of Bedfordshire", you then get an error message like this:

or this:

We're reported this problem to the providers of both DISCOVER and Web of Knowledge, and will let you know when we have a solution.

Using Web of Knowledge on your mobile

If you would like to use the Web of Knowledge/Web of Science database from your mobile, have a look at this guide.  You have to register for the service on campus, but then you can use it wherever you are.

DISCOVER - browsers supported

The Minimum Browser Requirements for DISCOVER (and for our other EBSCO databases) are:

Internet Explorer7.0 or later
FireFox8.0 or later
Safari5.1 or later
Google Chrome16 or later
OtherJavaScript, Cookies Enabled

If you are using an older version or a different browser, we cannot guarantee that DISCOVER will look and work correctly.

What is DISCOVER?

DISCOVER is your new single search solution that allows you to search most of our electronic resources and the library catalogue simultaneously and provides you with current availability information on library catalogue items.

DISCOVER is based on the EBSCOhost interface so will look familiar and can be searched in the same way as the EBSCO databases.

Once you have a list of results you can use the Integrated Search options on the right hand side of the screen to add results from other databases.

Results from any electronic resource can be saved to your personal My EBSCOhost folder, and your saved Preferences are available using DISCOVER.

For help with with using DISCOVER please contact your Academic Liaison Librarian.

Anatomy.tv - "anatomy.tv concurrent users limit warning"

We're currently seeing high levels of use of Anatomy.tv, and some users may be getting the "anatomy.tv concurrent users limit warning". This means that the number of University of Bedfordshire users at any one time is set by the database provider and when this has been exceeded you will see this error message. Please ensure you always log out of any session using the log out button as opposed to closing your browser - this will ensure that the next person is able to access Anatomy.tv correctly.

We expect that the usual links will be working again later today.

Getting to the full text of an article from British Nursing Index

Databases like British Nursing Index are indexes of citations, rather than collections of full text articles - so we do not necessarily have full text for each result. However, from the result list in British Nursing Index you can click the "LinkSource" button to find out whether or not we have full text access to that article.

In many cases we do - if so follow the link under "Resources Located for this Citation" and you will get through to the article.

Exam papers update

We are still working on the problem with opening exam papers.  We now think that the problem only occurs if you have gone to the Digital Library page and done a search in the Exam Papers box.  If you have typed the exam title directly into the Quick Search box, you can open it correctly.

So, until we find a complete fix, you can use the digital library page to find exam papers, but then copy the title, go to Quick Search and paste in the title and search - you should then find that you when you have entered your username and password the exam paper opens correctly.

If this doesn't work for you, please let us know

Webbridge
You may be familiar with the WebBridge button, which helps you get from a citation or abstract to the full text of an article, if the library has it.  We are in the process of changing from WebBridge to a new service, LinkSource, which does the same thing (but we hope it will do it better).  Look out for the LinkSource icons:

Library catalogue downtime extended to 12 noon

Work is taking longer than expected - alternative access to many resources here. In the meantime, there is no access to the library catalogue.

EBSCO Resources via Mobile Devices

EBSCO have now released an Android App along with their existing iPhone App.

To register for the service you need to access an EBSCO service via a normal login route, either on or off campus.

At the bottom of the database / search screen is a link to the Android  / IPhone registration page.

Enter your email address

You will then receive an email which you must open on your mobile device.

The first step is to download and install the appropriate App from one of the two links given.

Then activate access via the link in the email and the App will open and show your preferred search interface.

If you want to switch to a different search interface eg from EBSCO Research Databases to Discover, then you will need to access that service from a normal browser on your PC or mobile device and reregister the link at the bottom of the page of that service. You do need to do this each time unless you are reusing the existing email authentication link within 24 hours.

Any queries please ask!
