NewsBank’s Special Reports are news articles, images, maps and other useful content grouped for convenience under specific topics and themes. Easily accessible within NewsBank resources, they enable you to quickly locate information on a specific subject while helping you gain better insight into current global issues and events. Each Report features current and retrospective coverage, and new articles are added daily. There are over 60 Reports to be sure the information you need is always available.

All Special Reports are accessed from the left side bar on your online resource menu page, on search screens and the Other NewsBank Products link in full-text newspaper products.

ProQuest downtime 10th July

The ProQuest platform (search.proquest.com) will be taking a two-hour maintenance window from 03:00 to 05:00 on Sunday 10th July to prepare for the upcoming migration to a cloud-based infrastructure.

During this time access to all ProQuest platform databases will not be available and users will be re-directed to a webpage explaining the scheduled maintenance.

What are we doing?

  • ICT are carrying out essential central Storage upgrade which will require shutdown of all systems.

What will be affected? And when?

  • Email system: Saturday 23rd  July 2016 at 06:00 to Sunday 24rd  July 2016 22:00

  • Other ICT  Services, including; Finance Systems; Student Record Systems; Breo; S-Drive; U-Drive; Local-Drives, University Internet; Printing etc. : Friday  22nd July 2016 at 19:00 to Sunday 24rd  July 2016 22:00

Who will this affect?

  • All Staff and all Students

Why are we doing this?

  • As part of a rolling programme of maintenance and support, we are carrying out an essential upgrade to all storage systems. In order to carry out this work, downtime of one weekend is required.

Login problems update - ebooks, RefWorks, Reading lists and other UK Access Management Federation resources

We believe we have a fix for the login problems we have been having with ebooks, RefWorksReading lists and other UK Access Management Federation resources. 

If it still doesn't work for you, try clearing your cookies and cache (http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser's-Cache) and starting a fresh browser session. 

If it still doesn't work after that, please let us know and we will pass that information to the ICT team for further investigation.

Login problems - ebooks, RefWorks, Reading lists and other UK Access Management Federation resources

We're once again having an issue with login to ebooks, RefWorks, Reading lists and other UK Access Management Federation resources.

Annual Reviews Website Maintenance 24th June

Annual Reviews have planned routine maintenance to their website starting 11pm on Friday 24th June until 3am on Saturday 25th June.


Website content may be unavailable during that time.


This affects journals with www.annualreviews.org in the URL.




Scheduled maintenance to the Taylor & Francis Online platform Friday 24th - Saturday 25th June


Taylor & Francis Online is expected to be unavailable during a period of four hours due to scheduled database maintenance. This will take place on Friday 24th June 11pm to Saturday 25th June 3am. This will affect all journals with www.tandfonline.com in the URL.



JISC Historical Texts upgrade



There was a major update to Historical Texts on 21 June 2016. This release includes additional data as well as a range of new features that have been requested by our user community.


EEBO enhancements

(Early English Books Online (EEBO) contains the scanned images, and full-text digital versions where available, of over 125,000 books published in English up to 1700.)

* New EEBO periodicals search

* EEBO periodicals display improved

* Additional XML, HTML, epub and plain text download options for EEBO texts with manually keyed text transcriptions (EEBO TCP)

* Additional EEBO images

* Additional 20,000 EEBO TCP full text transcriptions

* Search on EEBO TCP ID

ECCO enhancements

(Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) is a digital collection of more than 180,000 titles published in Great Britain and its colonies during the eighteenth century.)


* 2000 ECCO manually keyed text transcriptions (ECCO TCP) available for the first time

* Additional XML, HTML, epub and plain text download options for ECCO texts with manually keyed text transcriptions (ECCO TCP)

* Links between volumes of multi-volume works

* Search on ESTC number with or without the leading zero


British Library 19th Century collection.enhancements

(Over 65,000 recently digitised editions from the British Library's 19th century collection, comprising over 25 million pages of previously rare and inaccessible titles.)
