"Your connection is not secure" messages when accessing library resources

We are having some issues using the library system to connect to resources which use https, resulting in messages like this:

or this:

Rest assured that if you've come through the library catalogue or DISCOVER, and the link you're trying to access has brum.beds.ac.uk in the URL, then it's just a technical hitch not a real security risk. You can safely click Add Exception and then Confirm Security Exception.

Social Media in the UK

Some interesting statistics on the use of social media - particularly amongst adults - published on 23 August 2016, by the Office of National Statistics: a great source to cite in an assignment.

"Your login has been disabled due to intruder detection"

We're still getting reports of this problem:

This happens when your account has tried to login too many times with the wrong password. We think this is happening particularly when you change your password, but don't update saved passwords in your browser or device. If this happens either visit a library helpdesk or email us. We can reset your password temporarily but you will then need to go to our password reset site to set it to something secure (make sure you have 8 digits with 3 different characters, upper case, lowers case and numbers - there are some instructions here). And then remember to change any stored passwords in your browser or on your phone or tablet, otherwise the problem will just happen again!

Introducing PlumX Metrics in DISCOVER

From today you will see a new icon in your DISCOVER search results - this is for PlumX Metrics, and it's called a Plumprint.
The Plumprint gives you information about how popular the item is - how many times it's been downloaded (not just by UoB users), and what attention it has had elsewhere on the Internet, for example on social media, news sites and blogs.
Plumprints appear in the results list for books as well as journal articles.

If you hover over the icon, you'll see an overview of this information
or you can click on it to see the full details, and link out to posts and tweets.

Hopefully you'll find it useful!
