Changes to your University password

What are ICT doing?

We are changing the criteria that apply to University network passwords.

The new criteria will apply when passwords are changed, normally due to their expiry after the standard expiry period. We are moving from a minimum of eight characters to a minimum of 16, but the expiry period will remain 180 days. The criteria will be available on the password change page as usual.

The new criteria will also apply when new accounts are created.

When will this be happening?

The new password criteria for staff and students will be implemented from the 10th December 2020.

Why are we doing this?

ICT are making these changes to enhance the security of our passwords, to better protect our systems.

Who will be affected?

Staff and students.

Wiley ejournals problem

There is currently a problem with the Wiley ejournal site.  Wiley are working to fix this as soon as possible.

BREO - problems with links, and finding reading lists

BREO has been upgraded over the summer and will look a bit different to last year.

If you find that any links don't work for you, try logging into BREO in a different browser. Chrome seems to be giving the most problems, so try using Firefox or Edge instead.

Reading lists are now a little bit harder to find - you need to click on Books and Tools from the left-hand menu, and then choose Reading List (LTI)

If you cannot see these options, it is because your lecturer has not converted your unit correctly to the new format, so please contact them directly. You can still access your reading list by going to http://readinglists.beds.ac.uk and searching for your unit code or title.

Dawsonera ebooks moving to VLEbooks

The Dawsonera ebook platform is going to be turned off on 31st July 2020, and all of the ebooks we have there transferred to VLEbooks

Over the next few days we will be working to change all of the links from our library catalogue, DISCOVER and reading lists to point to the new location. There may be a short period where some ebooks are not yet available at the new site, and you may not be able to access them. If after Monday 3rd August you have any troubles accessing ebooks, please contact us at library.technical@beds.ac.uk.

If you have any Dawsonera ebook links saved anywhere else, these will stop working on 31st July.

Link to DISCOVER from BREO

BREO is having an update at the moment, but it seems to have reverted to an old version of the link out to DISCOVER, which will not let you log in to your DISCOVER folders. If this happens to you, follow this link which should let you access your folders correctly. We will get BREO changed as quickly as possible.

Dawsonera ebooks - provider change

If you are using Dawsonera ebooks you may see a warning notice like this:

This is because the company providing the service has gone into administration and ceased trading. Do not worry though, our Dawsonera ebooks are going to be migrating to another of our providers, VLEbooks

We do not yet have a date for this migration but we hope to have no break in service.

You do not have to do anything, as we will manage changing the links from reading lists, the library catalogue and DISCOVER

You may however lose access to any notes you had saved to the Dawsonera platform itself.

We will post more information as it becomes available.
