Access to journals from IEEE, Springer, Emerald, Taylor & Francis and Wiley - no more proxy errors

We're glad to say we have a solution to the "proxy error" problems affecting ejournal content from IEEE, Springer, Emerald, Taylor & Francis and Wiley over the last few weeks.

You should no longer get an error message when trying to access articles from these publishers, whether via DISCOVER or via the library catalogue.

If you do get any further errors, please let us know.

SpringerNature journals error message and workaround

We currently have a problem with journals on the SpringerNature platform (link.springer.com):

This is essentially the same problem as the Proxy errors we have been experiencing for a while with Wiley, Emerald, Taylor & Francis and IEEE journals.

We have rewritten the links from the library catalogue to avoid the problem but you may still see the problem when trying to access journal articles from DISCOVER. If this happens we suggest running a Journal title search in the library catalogue:

If you are on campus, you can choose the on campus link, otherwise choose via UK Access Management Federation:

and login to the UoB login screen with your usual UoB username and password:

You'll then be on the journal homepage and can use browse or search to find the article from your Discover results:

If you still struggle to access the article, please let us know and we will help you.

Springer ejournals access problems

We've noticed some problems accessing articles from Springer journals, where we are not getting access to items that we do have a subscription to. We have alerted the publisher and hope to have this resolved quickly.

Springer journals

The University subscribes to a few journals from the Springer who have recently reconfigured their web settings and this is causing a few browser problems. If you click into a journal from the library catalogue and you may get a message like the above if it is a Springer title. This is an example from Chrome but it will look pretty similar on Safari and Firefox.

To get into the journal, click on the Advanced button and select the option to Proceed (or 'Add Exception').

In the meantime, we will try to work with Springer to find a fix so this problem disappears.

Problem with access to Springer ejournals

We are having issues accessing Springer ejournals via our proxy server, and you may get an error like this:

502 Bad Gateway

Connection to remote host returned error 14.

We are investigating this, but in the meantime you can still access Springer journals:

Changes to Springer e-journals

The journal publisher Springer is changing their e-journal platform on 16 November. The new platform should be "faster, easier to use and optimized for most mobile devices". We have access to a small set of Springer journals, and our existing links should redirect automatically to the new site. The only disruption you should notice is if you have created a personal account at My SpringerLink, as these accounts will not be migrated.
