Problem opening pdfs from DISCOVER/EBSCO databases - fixed

There was a problem yesterday (Thursday) opening pdf files from DISCOVER and other EBSCO databases. This was due to a server failure at EBSCO and affected libraries worldwide. It has now been fixed, but if you do have any problems with DISCOVER or EBSCO databases, please let us know.

Dawsonera ebooks and pdf readers other than Adobe

If you are using a pdf reader other than Adobe (if you have a Mac or are running Linux, for example) you will find that Dawsonera ebooks do not work properly. The Dawsonera FAQ page states:

The ebooks are presented as PDFs and read using Adobe Reader. We recommend the latest Version but Versions 7, 8 and 9 are fine.

If this affects you then the best thing to do is to get Adobe reader for your computer (it's free, and available for lots of operating systems).

Viewing Dawsonera ebooks on an iPad

We've had reports of some people having problems viewing Dawsonera ebooks on iPads. There is a free PDF reader built into the iPad which opens normal PDFs but not secure ones like those from Dawsonera.  If you want to read Dawsonera ebooks on your iPad, download the Adobe Reader for iPad.

Exam papers update

We are still working on the problem with opening exam papers.  We now think that the problem only occurs if you have gone to the Digital Library page and done a search in the Exam Papers box.  If you have typed the exam title directly into the Quick Search box, you can open it correctly.

So, until we find a complete fix, you can use the digital library page to find exam papers, but then copy the title, go to Quick Search and paste in the title and search - you should then find that you when you have entered your username and password the exam paper opens correctly.

Exam papers still unavailable

Unfortunately we are still having problems providing access to exam papers, and to some other types of material in the library catalogue.  The problem has been reported to our supplier and we hope to have it resolved before too long.
