The Emerald Insight journal platform will be down for maintenance on Friday 30 January between 11pm and 3am.

This will affect all journals with www.emeraldinsight.com in the url.

Science Direct double login problem fixed

The problem with Science Direct journals asking for a double login has now been fixed. If you still experience strange behavior in Science Direct, let us know and we will investigate.

Using DISCOVER and other EBSCO databases off campus

If you are off campus and you use the search box from LRweb to search DISCOVER, you'll find yourself faced with a login page before you can proceed.

It seems obvious that you'd put your username and password in the boxes on this screen - but it's wrong, and all you'll get is an error message. What you need to do is choose the "Shibboleth login" link. You'll then need to choose University of Bedfordshire from a list of institutions. After than, you'll get a UoB login screen like this.

Then you can safely use your usual username and password. If you still get an error after this, contact us and we'll investigate for you.

Alternatively, you can access DISCOVER using fewer steps by going to http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/discover. You'll see a library login page straight away without having to choose your university.

ScienceDirect double logins

We've noticed a problem today with logging in to ScienceDirect. It is asking for logins even if you are on campus, and if you are off campus, you may get asked more than once. We're trying  to get it set back the way it was, but in the meantime keep logging in when it asks.

Marketline login problems

We are having students reporting some problems logging in to Marketline from off campus. The UK Access Management Federation link is currently not working properly, and gives a message that our contract has expired, which is not the case. The Off campus link is working for some users, but others are getting an error message. The On campus link seems to be OK.

We have reported these problems to Marketline and hope to have them resolved soon.

If you have any other problems with Marketline, please let us know.

New interface for JISC Journal Archives

JISC Journal Archives has had a makeover and incorporates a new user interface with an article viewer. It provides access to the same 8 publisher backfiles as the previous platform, enabling you to cross search, view and download articles from over 600 journals from 8 publisher backfiles.

You can search by author, article title, journal title, ISSN or across the full text. You can also specify dates, volumes, issues, start page or a DOI to narrow down your results set. All of the articles are available as PDFs which can either be viewed in the PDF viewer (similar to the viewer in Historical Texts) or downloaded.

A short introductory video is available on JISC's support page.

We have now had a solution for our XpertHR login problem, so there is no longer any need to use the temporary password. You can use you usual UoB login: follow the UK Access Management Federation link from the library catalogue record, and select University of Bedfordshire from the list of institutions.

XpertHR update

We have not yet been able to solve our login problem with XpertHR, but in the meantime they have given us a temporary username and password. You can access this through the library catalogue.

We're having difficulties logging on to XpertHR this morning, and users are getting this error message after our login screen:
You do not have permission to access this resource. Please contact your Athens administrator.
However, if you go back and try a second time, you will find that you can access the database after all.

We have reported this and hope to have it sorted out soon.

Emerald journals downtime Friday 9th January, 11pm - 3am.

We've been warned of planned downtime for the Emerald ejournal platform on Friday 9th January, 11pm - 3am. During this maintenance window, Emerald ejournals will be unavailable for up to 2 hours. If you access the website during this time you will receive a 'connection timeout', or similar message, within your browser.
This will only affect journals with www.emeraldinsight.com in the URL.

Wednesday 7 January 2015

"504 Gateway Timeout", "Proxy Error"

These are error messages that keep cropping up, and they both mean the same thing - a miscommunication between your browser and the page you're trying to access, probably caused by cookies in your browser. It happens you are using one of the links with "0-...brum.beds.ac.uk" in, which we use to present you to publisher sites as a University of Bedfordshire user. The only solution we've found is to clear the cache and cookies in your browser (how to do this varies depending which browser you are using) and start again.

Pearson ebooks on Dawsonera - read online only

The publisher Pearson has changed its position on the use of its ebooks on Dawsonera. As of Monday 12 January, Pearson ebooks will only be available to read online, not to download to your device. If the ebook you are using is affected, you will see a message like this:

This change is not something that we are able to control. However, it only affects around 180 ebooks out of the over 6000 we have accessible on Dawsonera.
